The Project

The Great Escape was one of the first projects I created from start to finish. I started the project in January of 2020, and we all know what happened just a few weeks later. In the beginning, I was mainly operating out of a computer lab at FIT, refusing to download Autodesk Maya on my computer out of fear, and mentally not commiting to this project with impending deadlines right around the corner. When the pandemic began and we were all forced inside of our childhood bedrooms, I caved, although kicking and screaming, finally began conceptualizing and working on this idea, to make a noodle. I was quickly reminded by the comfort brought to us by cartoons as children, especially when you get to make it yourself.

The Process

The process began like any other, with a brief, in this unique case, it gave complete freedom regarding subject matter. So naturally, I chose a piece of pasta to spend the next 4-5 months with. The storyboard panels pictured below did not account for camera angles, timing, or any of the additional aspects that are highly recommended in this stage, but the idea translated and the project was approved to move forward. Due to the hopeful future possibility of dynamic camera angles, I couldn't have a hollow noodle, which made the modeling a bit more complicated than I had anticipated. However, the fight to escape had to go on. For the set, I went for a more retro 50's vibe, bright cabinets, shiny knobs, pink walls, and sunlight shining through the window to illuminate the courageous noodle.
